DRDO Developing Rudram Missile: India’s Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO) has launched an ambitious missile development program, which can bring revolutionary changes in the country’s air to surface abilities through the Rudram missile series. Rudram-2, Rudram-3 and Rudram-4 missiles hypersonic and supersonic weapons are designed to neutralize enemy radar installations and carry out accurate ground attacks.
These indigenous systems are strategically deployed to provide stand-off strike capabilities to the Indian armed forces, which can enter the heavy security airspace, maintaining strategic flexibility. The timeline of the depletion indicates that the three versions will be ready in the next 3-4 years, which will be an important milestone in self-sufficiency in the advanced weapon system.
Rudram-2 completed testing
Rudram-II has achieved the most advanced development status, which successfully completed the flight test from Sukhoi-30 MKI aircraft on the coast of Odisha in May 2024. This has increased the possibility of inclusion of missiles in the Indian Air Force. Successful testing shows that Rudram-II has reached verification from developmental stages, causing it to reach closest to real deployment from all three variants.
Rudram-3 fabrication reached face
Rudram-III has entered the construction phase, DRDO has focused on this more advanced variant after its earlier success. Ameya Prison Engineers have contract for supply of AMPT PCB Warhead Assembly, which is expected to be delivered by the end of 2024. Captive flight tests for Rudram-III are going to start next year. This time limit shows that Rudram-III will probably achieve omestic status by 2026-2027.
Rudram-4 will develop by the end of this year
Rudram-IV is the newest member in this family, whose development work is reported to be started by 2025. Initial specifications indicate that this variant will have extended range capabilities of more than 300 kilometers. However, recent reports suggest that the missile can achieve a range of more than 1000 km as a subconic cruise missile.
