England won the toss, but first chose bowling. This decision was severely criticized. The Indian team batted first and scored 587 runs on the basis of captain Shubman Gill’s 269 runs. In the first innings, Yashasvi Jaiswal scored 87 and Ravindra Jadeja scored 89 runs for Team India. In response, Harry Brook scored 158 runs and Jamie Smith scored 184 runs, but no other batsman besides him could play a big innings. As a result, England team was reduced to 407 runs. India had a huge lead of 180 runs in the first innings.
By the time India’s second innings came, the Indian batsmen rapidly carried the scoreboard forward. Captain Gill also scored 161 runs in the second innings, which scored 430 runs in the entire match. Gill became only the 5th batsman in the world, who has scored more than 400 runs in one Test match. In the second innings, KL Rahul (55), Rishabh Pant (65) and Ravindra Jadeja (69), all three batsmen put fifty. India had declared its second innings for 427 runs.
England got a target of 608 runs in the fourth innings. Chasing the target, half of England’s team returned to the pavilion for a score of 84. On the fifth day, when the England batsmen landed in the field, it became clear in the first hour that the English team is batting with the intention of draw. Ben Stokes and Jamie Smith worked to push India away from victory for a long time, but did not succeed. England kept losing wickets at regular intervals after Stokes was dismissed.
