India Israel Defense Deal: The Iron Dome air defense system, which became a shield for Israel in the war against Hamas, Hezbollah and Iran, can now be available to India too. Prime Minister Narendra Modi is going to visit Israel on Wednesday. During this visit, a defense deal worth several billion dollars can be signed between the two countries. These agreements may include missiles, AI technology, drones and air defense systems.
Meanwhile, Israel has made a big proposal to transfer the technology of Iron Dome air defense system to India. This is the system that Israel has successfully used in the war against Hamas, Hezbollah, Iran and Yemen’s Houthis. The success rate of Iron Dome is said to be around 90 percent. It is very effective against rocket, missile and drone attacks. Amidst the growing threat from China and Pakistan, this system can become a strong security shield for India.
Israel wants to increase defense cooperation with India
Israeli Consul General in India Yaniv Revach said in an interview that Israel wants to further strengthen its defense agreement with India. He says that Israel wants to share its technology with India and also wants to manufacture military equipment in India.
Revach said, ‘We are very excited that Prime Minister Modi is coming to Israel this week. India is emerging as a global superpower today. A cabinet proposal is also ready for this tour, in which political, economic and defense issues will be addressed.
Trying to form a new alliance
The Consul General said that Israel understands the sensitive situation in this region. He told that Israel is trying to form a new cooperation group with India, Abraham Accords countries, some African countries and Middle East countries like Cyprus and Greece. Its purpose is to deal with fundamentalist forces. He said that this visit of Prime Minister Modi can play an important role in taking this initiative forward.
Special focus will be on defense cooperation
Revach said that defense cooperation between India and Israel is continuously increasing. Both countries are facing similar challenges. He said that during this visit, special attention will be given to manufacturing in India, defense cooperation and partnership in systems like Iron Dome. He also said that along with defence, economic and political cooperation is equally important. Israel also understands India’s needs for permanent membership in the United Nations Security Council.
How powerful is Iron Dome?
Iron Dome is a mobile air defense system. It has been made jointly by Israeli company Rafael Advanced Defense System and Israel Aerospace Industries. It is designed to intercept short-range rockets, missiles and drones so that populated areas can be protected. This system identifies the enemy with the help of radar. If the threat is detected true, it fires the Tamir interceptor missile and destroys the attack in the air itself.
How much is Iron Dome worth?
A battery in Iron Dome consists of a radar, a control center and a launcher. Each launcher carries at least 20 Tamir interceptor missiles. This system assesses the direction and target of every attack. If the attack is going into an empty area then it also ignores it. It is quite effective against rockets, mortars and shells coming from low altitude. Israel has so far shot down thousands of rockets coming from Gaza and Lebanon.
Although Iron Dome is quite effective, it is also expensive. The cost of a Tamir interceptor missile is around 40 to 50 thousand dollars. Whereas the price of an Iron Dome battery can be up to 100 million dollars. In such a situation, India will have to consider all aspects before buying it. Experts believe that India should also look at cheaper options such as Iron Beam, which is a laser-based weapon system.
