India Pakistan tension: The increasing conflict between India and Pakistan is no longer the news of the border. Its effect can also be clearly visible on the plate of Asia. Rice, onion and other essential food items are threatened by this tension.
Actually, India is currently the world’s largest rice exporter. Pakistan also comes at number four in this race. Together, the two countries send not only rice but also onion and other necessary food items to many countries of South East Asia. In such a situation, any kind of war or conflict between these two countries can directly affect the supply and prices of these goods.
Rice will have to be ordered from another place
Malaysia has expressed the most concern after the Aircrafts made by India and Pakistan’s retaliation. Speaking to South China Post, Food Security Minister of Malaysia, a country with a 65 per cent Muslim population, said, “If the war or stress ports or delivery infrastructure affects the infrastructure, the rice import of our country will be affected.”
This country depends on India
Countries like Malaysia, Indonesia and Singapore are largely dependent on India and Pakistan for rice. Malaysia produces only 50 percent of its total rice consumption itself. The rest has to be ordered from countries like India, Pakistan, Vietnam and Thailand. 40 percent rice comes alone from India and Pakistan.
Price can reach the sky
The Malaysia government has said that at present they have rice stock for 6 months, but the problem is not only about stock, it is also of prices. Cheap rice of India shook the global market in the last few years. Rice sales of countries like Thailand and Vietnam had fallen. But now if stress increases, prices may rise.
Now pressure can increase
Malaysia is already facing domestic rice crisis. There are allegations that some cartel is deliberately hiding the stock of rice, so that prices will increase further. In such a situation, if the war between Indo-Pak increases, then this crisis can be deeper.
Neighboring countries have also seen the impact of Ukraine war
Wars do not have the effect of rice or wheat. When the Ukraine war took place, the prices of chicken in Malaysia had increased significantly because maize (feed) became expensive. As a result, Malaysia stopped the export of chicken and countries like Singapore had to get chicken from far-flung countries like Brazil.
