Bangladesh cricket has come at the center of a big controversy. A statement by M. Nazmul Islam, a senior official of Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) and Chairman of the Finance Committee, has surprised the entire cricket community. Nazmul Islam made such comments on social media about former captain Tamim Iqbal, which created a stir not only in the country but also at the international level.
How did the controversy start?
In fact, Tamim Iqbal had recently said in an interview that the Bangladesh Cricket Board should give priority to cricket rather than politics or emotions while taking a decision on the team’s participation in the T20 World Cup. Shortly thereafter, BCB official M. Nazmul Islam, through a Facebook post, made serious allegations against Tamim of being an ‘agent of India’. This post of his went viral in no time and a sharp reaction started on social media.
Case erupted due to social media post
The statement written in Nazmul Islam’s Facebook post is being considered derogatory not only for Tamim Iqbal but also for the entire Bangladeshi cricket community. This controversy came to light at a time when discussions were already going on regarding the tournaments to be held in India and decisions related to IPL. In such a situation, this comment of a responsible board official proved to be like adding fuel to the fire.
Cricketers Welfare Association’s tough stance
Cricketers Welfare Association of Bangladesh (CWAB) has lodged a strong protest on this entire matter. CWAB has written a letter to BCB President demanding a public apology from Nazmul Islam and action against him. The organization says that such comments on senior and country’s most successful players like Tamim Iqbal are condemnable and an insult to the entire cricket system.
Players also expressed their displeasure
Many current and former Bangladeshi cricketers have also criticized this statement. Taijul Islam called it shocking and unacceptable. According to him, speaking like this after holding such a high position shows your mentality. Whereas Mominul Haq said that such language raises questions on the morality and responsibility of the board. Players believe that publicly targeting a former captain is against the entire cricket culture. For this he should apologize to the former captain.
