Even after months of anti-immigration protests in Australia, attacks on Indian immigrants continue. Recently, a racial attack came to light in Geelong, Melbourne, in which a 22-year-old Sikh nurse’s nose was broken. This incident happened on Tuesday (17 February) night in a gym in Koryo.
Victim Harmanpreet Singh told that when he was training in the gym at around 11 pm, three people surrounded him and abused him. Harmanpreet had no idea what was going to happen to her. As soon as he came out of the gym, he saw that all three people were waiting for him outside.
What did the victim Harmanpreet tell?
Harmanpreet said she was called a “dog” and told to “go back to where you came from”. After some time, one of the men hit his head on Harmanpreet’s nose and started bleeding profusely. The victim told Australian media 9News that he came very close to my face and then suddenly stepped back and hit his head on my nose. After this all three fled from the spot.
Local people took the injured Harmanpreet to the hospital. Talking to the media, the nurse said that the victim is still shocked by this incident and abuse. He added, “Nobody wants to hear that. Especially when you’re at work.”
‘The entire family is shocked by this incident’
This is not the first case of racial abuse against Harmanpreet in Australia. However, this incident has had a deep impact on him mentally. Khushi Kaur, sister of the Sikh youth, said that the entire family is deeply shocked by this incident. Harmanpreet said that I try to keep myself strong, do not care about such things, but still it hurts. He further said that I don’t know whether I will be able to go back to the gym or not. I will not feel safe after this incident.
