According to the news of the ‘The Straits Times’ newspaper, this child named Mannat Singh was only six days when he came to know of a serious joint immune. Normal fever could also be dangerous for him due to SCID.
First child
Mannat is the first child in Singapore to detect SCID at birth. His stem-cell transplant was successfully done in 2023 before the symptoms of SCID emerged. The newspaper told that vow is healthy now. Mannat was ‘Artemis SCID’, which is a rare form of ‘Rasactive Radiocenestic SCID’. This meant that he could not be treated with radiation or some of his scan could not be done.
According to the news of the newspaper, if there was no treatment, then Mannat might not have been able to celebrate his first birthday. Her 39 -year -old mother Harminder Kaur is a nurse while her 39 -year -old father Harminder Singh is an IT consultant. Kaur was very worried and scared of her young son’s disease.
Her husband Harminder Singh said, “The circumstances were completely against her, our mood was not right.” Kaur said, “I think life has become normal now and we have left the past behind.” About the disease of Mannat, KK Women and Children’s Hospital (KKH) was revealed through the program “National Extended Newborn Screening ‘(NENS).
Treatable severe infant diseases included
The program began in 2006, which aims to check the metabolism and genetic diseases of all infants born in Singapore. Expanding the program, in 2019 it included five more treated child diseases like SCID and cystic fibrosis.
Dr. Bianka Chan, advisor to Rumetology and Immunology Services in KKH, said that the only real treatment for SCID is a healthy donor from a healthy donor. Stem cells from the bone marrow of a healthy donor can develop in T-cells fighting infections, which help infants suffering from SCID to create a working immune system.
He said, “Before any other infection in the child, the discovery of the disease is more expected to be successful within three to four months. In such a situation, SCID screening becomes important at birth. ”
