A man of Indian origin named Mehul Goswami living in New York has been arrested by the police on charges of fraud and theft of government money. He is accused of doing two government jobs at the same time and embezzling an amount of about $50,000 (about Rs 42 lakh) from state funds. Now he may have to face 15 years in jail.
According to the report, Mehul Goswami was working as a remote worker in the New York State Office of Information Technology Services (ITS). During this time, he also took up another job in the nearby city of Malta and continued taking salary from both the places.
Fraud revealed in investigation
This case came to light in a joint investigation by the Saratoga County Sheriff’s Office and the New York State Inspector General’s Office. After investigation, it was found that Goswami was doing another full-time job even while holding a state job, which is a serious violation of the rules. Inspector General Lucy Lang said in the statement – ‘Government employees are responsible for serving the public, and Goswami’s actions are a serious breach of that trust.’ He further said that doing another full-time job while doing a government job is a misuse of public tax money.

According to reports, Goswami’s crime is non-bailable. Officials said the matter will be resolved cooperatively and the judicial process will move forward. Working two jobs at once in America, known as ‘moonlighting’, has grown rapidly in the last few years. According to US Census Bureau data, the number of people working two jobs increased by about 10% between 1996 and 2018. More than four million American workers were working two jobs in 2022, many of whom were maintaining two full-time jobs.
