Mullah Mohammad Yacob, Defense Minister of the Taliban government, said in an online press conference from Doha that any violation of Afghanistan’s sovereignty or interference in its security will not be allowed. He said that the issue related to Durand Line is not included in the agreement, because it is a subject which is directly related to the Afghan people.
The focus will be on the outline of the agreement in the upcoming talks
Mulla Yaqoob said that the mechanism for implementation of the current agreement will be discussed in the next round of talks to be held in Türkiye. When asked about guarantees on possible attacks by Pakistan or violation of the agreement, he said that Pakistan has expressed its commitment to two other countries. If Pakistan takes any aggressive action, then Afghanistan is fully prepared to respond.
Trade resumption and refugees were also discussed
Mulla Yaqoob said that an agreement has been reached between the two countries to return trade to normal. He stressed that Afghanistan is an independent country and it wants to maintain good relations with all countries including Pakistan on the basis of its national interests. On the issue of refugees, he said that the demand for humane treatment of Afghan refugees has also been discussed.
Afghan government spokesperson Zabihullah Mujahid said that Pakistan carried out air strikes in Afghanistan a few hours after extending the ceasefire. The attacks took place on Friday, when the ceasefire that had been in place since Wednesday was extended during the ongoing peace talks in Doha. Mujahid said that civilians were targeted in these attacks and Kabul has the right to respond. However, he also said that out of respect for the negotiation team, Afghan fighters have been instructed not to retaliate for now.
Both countries looking for solution amid border conflict
Dozens of people have died and hundreds have been injured in recent clashes between Pakistan and Afghanistan. The talks between the two countries were led by Pakistan’s Asif and Afghan Defense Minister Mullah Mohammad Yacob. The ground battle and Pakistan’s air action took place along the 2,600 km long disputed border of the two countries. Pakistan says that militant groups based in Afghanistan have recently intensified attacks in Pakistan, and Kabul should stop them.
