Iran War Impact on Internet: Due to the ongoing war between America, Israel and Iran for the last one month, after oil and gas supply, the Internet is also being affected. Actually, many internet cables pass through the Red Sea and the Strait of Hormuz. Many reports have claimed that Iran has threatened to damage these cables. If this happens, internet connectivity may be affected in many countries including India. Keeping this in view, the Government of India has started its preparations.
Instructions given to companies to be prepared
According to Moneycontrol, in a recent meeting, Department of Telecommunications (DoT) officials have asked telecom and subsea cable operators to keep backup plans ready. Due to the Iran war, there is a danger of breakage of internet cables as well as delay in their maintenance, due to which the connectivity of many European countries along with India may also get disrupted. The government has asked operators to review potential risks and has taken information about the time taken for backup plans. Companies have also asked the government for help in negotiations with Iran for the security of Internet cables.
95 percent of data passes through internet cables laid in the sea
Cables have been laid in the ocean for internet connectivity across the world. About 95 percent of global data flows through them. India has 17 such cables at 14 landing stations. These landing stations are built at places like Chennai, Mumbai, Kochi and Tuticorin etc. If the cables laid in the Strait of Hormuz and the Red Sea are damaged, India’s internet traffic can be diverted to other routes, but this will affect the speed and the load on those routes will be higher than before.
Situation worsened at these places
Internet cables laid in the sea are currently in greater danger at two places. These places are the Strait of Hormuz and Bab-el-Mandeb located in the Red Sea. Due to the war, the situation at both these places remains bad. Iran currently has complete control over the Strait of Hormuz. On the other hand, Iran-backed Houthi rebels are threatening to block Bab-el-Mandeb. The situation in the Red Sea was already a bit bad and now after the war started, the Strait of Hormuz has also become a choking point.
