Haryana government has taken a major administrative step amid the ongoing controversy over the alleged suicide of IPS officer Y Puran Kumar. On Sunday (December 14), the government relieved IPS officer Shatrujit Kapoor from the post of Director General of Police (DGP). Earlier, due to this matter, Kapoor was sent on leave for two months. This decision of the government is being seen as a major change in the police department.
Command handed over to OP Singh
Senior IPS officer OP Singh, who was already holding additional charge in the absence of Shatrujit Kapoor, has been appointed acting DGP till further orders.
In the order issued by the government, it has been said that OP Singh will currently perform the responsibility as the chief of Haryana Police Force. He will have a big challenge to handle the law and order of the state.
Haryana government may soon start the process of appointing a new permanent DGP. For this, a list of senior IPS officers is likely to be sent to the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC).
The name of the new DGP will be finalized only after the approval of UPSC. The special thing is that 1992 batch IPS officer OP Singh is going to retire on December 31, hence his assignment is being considered as temporary.
Kapoor’s second responsibility continues
According to the government order, 1990 batch IPS officer Shatrujit Kapoor will continue to be the chairman of Haryana Police Housing Corporation, Panchkula, despite his removal from the post of DGP. Kapoor is an engineering graduate and was appointed Director General of Police of Haryana in August 2023.

The case of alleged suicide of IPS officer Y Puran Kumar continues to be in the headlines. The opposition has been raising questions on the government regarding this matter and has also been demanding an impartial investigation.
