On Monday, there was a discussion in the Lok Sabha on the completion of 150 years of ‘Vande Mataram’, in which Samajwadi Party MP from Kairana seat of UP, Iqra Hasan, expressed her views. During this, while explaining the meaning of Vande Mataram, he attacked the government and said that today it is important for us to understand the meaning of the song. This song worships the nature of the country.
Iqra Hasan also raised questions on putting Muslims in the dock regarding Vande Mataram and said that we Indian Muslims are Indians by choice, not by chance. The decision as to which verses of Vande Mataram should be adopted was taken in consultation with Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose and Guru Rabindranath Tagore. Will we now question the understanding of those great heroes?
SP MP explained the meaning of ‘Vande Mataram’
The SP MP said that those great personalities adopted those verses of Mataram who worked to unite all the sections of the country. Today it is important for us to understand the meaning of this song.
This song is dedicated to the worship of the country’s water, forest land, greenery and clean air, it wishes well being to the people of India. That every citizen of India remains healthy, safe and can live with dignity.
Sujalam Suflam means a country where there is enough water, where rivers are alive, flowing and giving life.. But, now look at the condition of Yamuna.. The report of Delhi Pollution Committee 2025 shows that in many parts of Yamuna, the BOD level has reached the level of 127 mg whereas for living rivers it should be only 3 mg per liter.
This is not just a river crisis but a farmer’s crisis. Crores of rupees were spent in the name of ‘Namami Gange’ but the truth is that today farmers are forced to do farming in the same poisonous water on the banks of Ganga and Yamuna. How will Suflam happen when water becomes poison?
In ‘Malayaj Shitalam’, Malayaj means the cool fragrant wind blowing from the Malay Mountains which gives life and not disease. Is the air of today’s India a Malayan Shitalam? Just step outside the Parliament, take a deep breath, this is not air, this is poison that is entering your and our lungs.
We are a country which worships nature but its forests and air are themselves destroying the laws to protect trees. If we are not able to clean the air, neither Sujlam nor Suflam will survive. Shasya Shamlam means where the land is fertile, the fields are full of crops and the farmers are not in despair.. Today farmers are dying not only due to weather but also due to pollution and policies of the system.
The SP MP said that today politics is being done using Vande Mataram as its foundation, but the land is being handed over to the capitalists. Tribal people are being removed from their homes. ‘Mataram’ not only worships the motherland but also talks about respect for every woman, daughter and woman of this earth. But if you look at the statistics, atrocities against women are increasing every year in the country.
