Iran is left alone in the war with America and Israel. Amidst the fierce attacks by America and Israel, its old allies Russia and China are limited only to strong condemnation and demand for a meeting in the UN Security Council. Military help or any major support is not available. There are four big reasons for this…
1. Russia does not want to jump straight into war
There was a strategic partnership agreement between Russia and Iran in 2025, but it is not a military alliance. Because of this, there is no legal obligation on Russia. Russia wants to keep itself in the role of mediator, and not fight a war on a new front. A Kremlin spokesman said, ‘Iran did not ask us for weapons.’ Russia is already embroiled in the Ukraine war, so does not want a new conflict.
2. China does not want to take risks on its economic interests
China is Iran’s biggest oil buyer, but it also has strong economic ties with Gulf countries like Saudi Arabia and UAE. If we openly support Iran, we may distance ourselves from the Gulf countries. Chinese expert Yun Sun said, ‘China is ready to work with whatever new leadership comes after the attack. Provided that oil flow continues and economic interests remain safe. If the Strait of Hormuz remains closed for a long time, China may be forced to do something, but not at the moment.
3. Maintaining balance in West Asia
Russia and China want balance with Iran as well as its adversaries. Being completely attached to one party may make the other partners angry. Both countries do not want direct conflict with America. Because of this, they are not openly taking the field with Iran.
4. Danger of global conflict with America
Providing military aid could lead to a major conflict with America, which could prove costly for both countries. Therefore they are limited to diplomatic statements, condemnation and demand for a meeting in the UN. The Russian Foreign Ministry said that the attacks show no signs of easing tensions.
The war started with the death of Ayatollah Khamenei
This war started on 28 February 2026, when America and Israel launched major attacks on Iran, in which Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei was killed. Iran responded with missile and drone attacks. But now Iran is fighting alone. Its position has been further weakened by the distance between Russia and China. If the war continues for a long time and oil supply is affected, China may have to rethink its policy.
At present Russia and China are just talking, no action. This is a big blow for Iran and tension is increasing in the region.
