Amidst the ever-increasing nationwide protests in Iran, former US President Donald Trump has issued a stern warning to Tehran. He said that if the Iranian government continues to take violent action against its own citizens, it will have to face serious consequences. Speaking to reporters after an event in Detroit, Trump said the US was closely monitoring the situation in Iran, especially reports of killings and alleged executions of protesters.
This movement going on in Iran has now entered its third week. According to human rights organizations, hundreds of people have died, including children. The language Donald Trump used against Iran was harsh. Although he did not announce any specific action, his statement made it clear that Washington is not taking this matter lightly. Trump said that he will return to the White House to thoroughly review the situation in Iran and, especially, accurate data will be collected regarding the reports related to the killings. He also indicated that America will not reach any conclusion without confirmation, but the situation is worrying.
Allegations of murder and hanging of protesters
One of the most serious reports coming out during the protests in Iran is the alleged murder and hanging of protesters. When Trump was asked questions on these allegations, he said that if thousands of people are being killed and now talks of hanging are coming to the fore, then it will not prove to be good for Iran. According to human rights organizations, at least 505 protesters have died so far, including nine children. Apart from this, 133 security forces members, one prosecutor and many civilians have also lost their lives. These figures show that this movement is no longer just a struggle between the government versus the people, but has become a crisis affecting the entire country.
US options
Trump’s statement has come at a time when the White House has indicated that many options are open in the matter of Iran. White House Press Secretary Carolyn Levitt said that diplomacy is the administration’s first priority, but air strikes are also options. Along with this, Trump also announced a major economic decision. He announced that any country that trades with Iran will be imposed a 25 percent tariff on all trade with the US. Trump has called this order final and decisive.
Nationwide demonstration in Iran
These protests, which started in late December, have now spread to 187 cities, where demonstrations have been recorded at more than 606 places. This movement is considered to be one of the most widespread movements in the recent history of Iran. International reaction is divided on this issue. Some countries are calling it unrest inspired by foreign interference, while many Western countries and human rights organizations are accusing the Iranian government of excessive violence. Many international media organizations including Al Jazeera have called it a human rights crisis.
