Talks took place between Iran and America on Thursday (26 February). Oman’s Foreign Minister Badr Albusaidi, who is brokering the talks, said on social media that significant progress had been made between the two sides and that another round of talks would be held with technical teams in Vienna next week.
Information is being received from sources that the high-level and important talks between Iran and America on Thursday ended without any clear result. Neither was there any major success on the nuclear deal nor was there any deadlock in diplomacy that would have raised the possibility of military action from the US side. The details of the conversation are not clear yet.
What is Uranium Enrichment?
A major point of contention in the talks between the US and Iran is whether Tehran (Iran) will maintain its nuclear enrichment program? Iranian officials say that this is their hard-earned national right. Enriching uranium is a very complex process, in which less than 15 countries in the world have mastered it.
In the process of enrichment, a rare isotope of uranium, U-235, is isolated and its concentration is increased, making nuclear fission possible. This process is done through rapidly rotating cylinders called centrifuges. Low-enriched uranium can be used in power plants, while uranium enriched up to about 90 percent can be used to make nuclear weapons.
What did Iranian officials say?
Elias Hazrati, head of the Iranian government’s information council, said that serious talks have taken place and have now entered the phase of technical details. The news running in some media does not accurately reflect the reality of the conversation. Uranium enrichment will continue according to Iran’s national needs and relief from sanctions remains Iran’s main demand.
