Iran-US Tensions: ‘Remove sanctions, will reduce uranium’, Iran gave Trump an offer on nuclear program, Khamenei missing

US-Iran Talks: US President Donald Trump has said that America’s talks with Iran have been very good. This conversation took place in Oman on Friday, where the delegations of both the countries did not discuss directly face to face, but through talks. Trump indicated that Iran seems ready for an agreement, but the final decision will be on what the terms of the agreement are.

This meeting held in Oman was the first formal conversation between the two countries after the military attacks on Iran by America and Israel last year. Iran’s nuclear and military bases were targeted in these attacks. Now both sides have agreed to continue further talks after taking advice from their respective countries. Trump said the next round could take place as early as next week, although Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said no date has been set yet.

What happened in the US-Iran meeting?

Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi from Iran’s side and Special Envoy Steve Witkoff from America’s side participated in this conversation. Apart from this, Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner was also a part of this process. The talks were mediated by Oman’s Foreign Minister Badr al-Busaidi. He met both the delegations separately.

What issues were discussed?

Iran says that the scope of talks was limited only to its nuclear program. Araghchi clearly said that there was no discussion on ballistic missiles, groups operating in the region or the internal politics of the country. Iran also said that it is ready to guarantee that its nuclear program will be limited to peaceful purposes only if economic sanctions imposed on it are lifted. He also said that he is ready to limit it to 60 percent.

At the same time, America wants that the scope of talks should be wider and it should also include issues related to Iran’s missile program, support to armed organizations operating in the area and human rights. The biggest controversy is regarding uranium enrichment. Iran considers it its right, while America and its partner countries consider it a step towards nuclear weapons. A day after the talks, Araghchi reiterated that Iran is not ready to completely stop uranium enrichment.

Khamenei did not attend the army meeting for the first time in 37 years

Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei did not participate in the annual meeting of Air Force commanders to be held on February 8. This has happened for the first time in 37 years. He has been attending this meeting every year since assuming power in 1989. His absence has come to light at a time when tensions between Iran and America have increased considerably. This has intensified speculations about Tehran’s future strategy and also deepened fears of possible US military action.
