The incident of America sinking an Iranian warship amid increasing military tension in the Indian Ocean has increased concerns about India’s security and regional stability. The attack took place in international waters off the southern coast of Sri Lanka, which falls within Sri Lanka’s search and rescue zone.
According to Al Jazeera’s report, Iran has confirmed the second warship heading towards Sri Lankan waters. Sri Lankan government spokesperson Nalinda Jayatissa confirmed that a second Iranian warship was heading towards Sri Lanka’s territorial waters, the same area where an Iranian frigate was destroyed by a US submarine yesterday.
What did the Sri Lankan government tell?
Jayatissa said the warship, which reportedly had more than 100 crew on board, was just outside Sri Lankan territorial waters. This statement comes after the Sri Lankan Cabinet spokesperson said that the country is trying to save the lives of people aboard an Iranian ship near its coast. On Wednesday (March 4), an American submarine sank an Iranian warship with torpedoes in international waters off the coast of Sri Lanka.
What did Sri Lankan MP Namal Rajapaksa say?
The Sri Lankan Navy said that they rescued 32 Iranian sailors from the sinking ship, while a large number of the crew is still missing. Regarding this entire matter, Sri Lankan MP Namal Rajapaksa said that this is a matter of serious concern for Sri Lanka and also for the Indian Ocean. I am sure it is a matter of concern for India also. He further said that the war is happening miles away, but we are seeing such activity in the Indian Ocean which is only 40 nautical miles away from the coast of Sri Lanka.
