China on Monday (29 December 2025) launched military exercises in the central areas of the strait as a punitive and preventive action against Taiwan’s separatist forces. China conducted this exercise a few days after the US announced the sale of arms worth a record US $ 11.1 billion to Taipei. Many advanced fighter aircraft, long range artillery and naval ships are involved in these two exercises. This exercise took place amid increasing diplomatic tensions with Japan regarding Taiwan.

China’s military said, ‘The Eastern Theater Command of the Chinese People’s Liberation Army (PLA) is conducting exercises on Monday in the central areas of the Taiwan Strait by firing shells from long-range artillery along with fighter aircraft, bombing and drones.’

Since the visit of the then Speaker of the US House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi to Taipei in the year 2022, China has been conducting military exercises in full swing around Taiwan. This is the sixth such military exercise. The exercises are widely seen as a rehearsal for military action against the self-ruled island of Taiwan, which Beijing claims as part of its mainland.

What did China’s spokesperson Lin Jian tell?
Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian told a press conference here that this military exercise is a punitive and preventive action against separatist forces seeking Taiwan’s independence by increasing military power. He said that this exercise is a necessary step to protect China’s national sovereignty and territorial integrity.

Lin said that no one can stop China from protecting national sovereignty, security and territorial integrity. He said that whoever crosses the border on this issue or takes provocative action will get a strong response from China.

When Lin was asked whether these military exercises were being conducted in response to America’s record-breaking arms sales to Taiwan, he said, ‘Anyone who crosses the line or takes provocative action on this issue will get a strong response from China.’ Taiwan condemned China’s military exercises, saying that Beijing is using military exercises to threaten neighboring countries.
