With the falling temperature, the demand for electricity in Delhi has also started increasing rapidly. It is generally believed that the maximum consumption of electricity occurs in summer, but this time the demand for electricity in winter has surprised everyone by reaching close to the old record. In fact, on January 1, 2026, the maximum electricity demand in Delhi was recorded at 5603 MW, which is the highest level so far this winter. The demand on January 2 was 5595 watts, which is just 405 megawatts less than the estimated peak power demand.
Power demand may go up to 6000 MW this winter
According to power distribution companies, due to the increasing cold, the peak power demand of Delhi can reach 6000 MW this winter. Last year the maximum demand in winter was 5655 MW. Officials say that this is the third time in a span of a few days that the demand for electricity during the winter season has been recorded at more than 5000 MW.
Winter electricity demand in the last few years
If we look at the figures, electricity consumption is continuously increasing in winter. The maximum demand in 2023-2024 was 5816 MW, while in 2022-2023 it was 5526 MW and in 2021-2022 it was 5104 MW. It is clear from this that winter is also becoming an important season in terms of electricity consumption.
Why is the demand for electricity increasing in winter?
According to Discom officials, the biggest reason for the 6 to 8 percent increase in electricity demand in Delhi every year is weather. As winter increases, the use of heaters, blowers and other electric appliances increases, due to which consumption increases. Keeping in view the increasing demand, electricity distribution companies have made preparations in advance. To meet the demand, arrangements were made for 840 MW solar, 232 MW rooftop solar, 500 MW wind, 77 MW hybrid and 647 MW hydro power.
Estimates are being made through AI and machine learning.
Power companies are now taking the help of Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning for weather based forecasting. From this it is ascertained how much effect the changes in temperature, humidity, wind speed and weather will have on the demand for electricity. Also, a plan has been made to store extra electricity through battery energy storage system and use it during peak times.
