There is big news for Indian students and professionals who dream of studying in America and getting a job there. US President Donald Trump’s decision has now made this dream of Indians more expensive than ever. In fact, the Trump administration has increased the fee for H-1B visa to one lakh dollars (about Rs 88 lakh). This new rule has come into effect from 21 October 2025. However, students who are on F-1 visa have been given relief. Let us know who will get relief and who will have to pay more money.

H-1B is the same visa with the help of which thousands of Indian students get the opportunity to work in America after completing their studies. With this decision, the dream of getting an American work visa has become not only difficult but also extremely expensive. According to the notice released on the website of US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS), this fee will be applicable to those new H-1B visa petitions which will be filed on or after 12:01 am (9:31 am Indian time) on September 21, 2025. This means that now any new applying company will have to pay this huge amount for its foreign employees.

However, USCIS has also clarified that this fee will not apply to those who are already in the US and want to change or extend their visa status. Any student who is studying on F-1 student visa and wants to go for H-1B work visa after completing his studies, he will not have to pay this fee.

The price increased so many times

This has certainly brought some relief to Indian students, but this decision may increase difficulties for those students who are dreaming of getting a job in America in the future. Now the question is who will give this Rs 88 lakh? This amount will not be recovered from the employees, but from the American companies. Any company that wants to get an H-1B visa for a foreign employee will have to pay this fee with every application. Earlier this fee was between 1700 to 4500 dollars, which means now it has increased almost 20 times.

So many visas are issued every year

Every year, about 85 thousand H-1B visas are issued in America, out of which about 70 percent are given to Indians. This increased fee will have a direct impact on Indian professionals. This is bad news especially for new or mid-level employees, because companies will now think twice before spending such a huge amount.

These people go from India

American companies generally hire technical, IT and engineering experts from countries like India through H-1B visas. But now they will give chance only to those candidates whose skills are very special. This means that now the path to getting a job there has become more difficult than before.

Indians also affected

This decision will also affect Indian students. Students who start working through “Optional Practical Training” (OPT) after completing their studies in American universities and later apply for H-1B visa may now face difficulty in getting sponsorship from companies.

What is Trump’s argument?

The Trump administration argues that this decision has been taken to protect the employment of American citizens. He believed that the increasing number of foreign workers was reducing opportunities for local American workers. However, experts say that the contribution of Indians to America’s economy and technology sector has been very important.
