NMC has given permission to increase MBBS seats, which means now some medical colleges will be able to give admission to more students than before. This step has been taken to overcome the shortage of doctors and to give opportunity to more students.
What decision did NMC take?
The National Medical Commission has decided to relax the intake rules of MBBS seats for 2026-27. According to the old rules, the maximum limit of colleges was fixed, but now the college which fulfills the required rules, regulations, faculty and resources can increase the seats up to 250. Apart from this, NMC has also made it clear that permission to increase seats will be given in a phased manner. The inspection process will be made more strict and transparent than before, so that there is no compromise in the quality of education in the colleges which But if there is any reduction or penalty already applicable, they will not be allowed to increase their seats.
How many seats will increase?
Till now, MBBS seats were limited in many medical colleges, but according to the new guidelines, colleges can increase the seats from 150 to 200 or maximum 250 depending on their capacity, however this increase will be possible only when the colleges fulfill all the standards of NMC.
Why was this decision taken
The number of doctors in India is still less than required, especially in rural and remote areas. With a view to overcome this shortage, NMC has decided to expand MBBS seats so that more medical graduates can be produced in the coming years.
What will be the benefit for the students?
With this decision, NEET UG students will get a big benefit. With the increase in seats, the chances of admission in MBBS will increase, the pressure of competition will reduce to some extent and more students will be able to fulfill their dream of becoming a doctor.
How can you apply?
Medical colleges which want to increase MBBS seats or want to open a new medical college will have to visit the official website of NMC. The college will have to fill the online application form, in which all the necessary information will have to be entered correctly. Necessary documents related to the application will have to be uploaded online. The prescribed application fee will have to be paid through online mode. This entire application process will have to be completed between 29 December 2025 and 28 January 2026. After submission of application within the deadline, scrutiny of documents and further process will be started by NMC.
