Most of the youth preparing for government jobs dream of becoming a big officer after passing the UPSC exam. Especially services like IAS and IFS are most discussed. Often people ask, whose salary is higher in IAS or IFS? Do IFS officers really earn more than IAS?
According to the 7th Pay Commission, the starting basic salary of both IAS and IFS is Rs 56,100 per month. Meaning, when a new officer joins after completing training, the basic salary of both remains the same. As experience increases and promotion is received, salary also increases. On reaching a higher position, the basic salary of both can go up to Rs 2,50,000 per month.
Where is the real difference?
Now the question arises that when the basic salary is equal, then how does the income of IFS become more? Actually, the difference is made by the allowances. IAS officers mostly work in different state or central government departments of India. They get Dearness Allowance (DA), House Allowance (HRA), Traveling Allowance (TA) and medical facilities. IFS officers are mostly posted in Indian embassies or missions abroad. When they are posted abroad, they get Foreign Allowance, Hardship Allowance and many other international allowances. This is the reason why their total salary sometimes becomes quite high.
What is the total salary?
If posted in India, the total in-hand salary of both IAS and IFS can be around Rs 1 lakh to Rs 2.5 lakh per month. But if an IFS officer is posted in a developed country, his total earning can be Rs 3 lakh to Rs 4 lakh per month or even more. Because there they are given allowances in foreign currency. However, this amount depends on the country and posting. Allowances are different in every country. Not only salary, but many special facilities are also available in both the services.
IAS officers get a government bungalow, car, driver and security. IFS officers get a good house abroad, facilities for children’s education and sometimes even international level facilities. Medical facilities and pension are available in both the services. Simply put, the basic salary of IAS and IFS is equal. But if an IFS officer is posted abroad, his total earning can be more than that of IAS. Therefore, it would not be completely correct to say that the salary of IFS is always higher. Everything depends on the posting, country and position.
