US President Donald Trump has ordered his Defense Ministry Pentagon to immediately start testing nuclear weapons. Trump wrote on the social media platform ‘Truth Social’ that America needs to conduct nuclear tests on the same level as Russia and China.
President Trump said, “In view of the testing of other countries, I have instructed the Department of War that America should begin its testing soon.” It is noteworthy that America last conducted a nuclear test in Nevada on September 23, 1992, after which the then President George H.W. Bush had banned underground nuclear tests.
Questions raised regarding the timing of Trump’s order
Big questions are being raised about the timing of Trump’s order, because he had met Chinese President Xi Jinping in South Korea just a day before. At the same time, Russia has recently tested its nuclear weapons. In such a situation, this decision of Trump has come in an environment of global tension.
Trump made a big claim
Trump claimed that America has the largest number of nuclear weapons in the world, but according to the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons (ICAN), Russia has about 5,500 nuclear warheads, while America has about 5,044.
Recently, Russian President Vladimir Putin had ordered exercises to prepare for a nuclear attack. The Russian military test-fired intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs) Yars and Sineva missiles, as well as long-range cruise missiles from Tu-95 bomber aircraft. Responding to these tests, Trump had said that Putin should focus on ending the war, not on missile testing.
Trump’s order for nuclear testing has created a stir globally. Experts say this move could weaken global disarmament efforts and could also be considered a violation of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT), which the US signed in 1992.
IAEA warned
The IAEA (International Atomic Energy Agency) has warned that if America resumes testing, it could give rise to a new arms race. US Senator Elizabeth Warren said, “Trump is making nuclear weapons a toy.”
Analysts believe that this step of America is in response to the increasing nuclear influence of Russia and China, but it can cause a major blow to international peace and stability.
