Islamabad Mosque Blast: A deadly suicide attack during Friday prayers at a Shia mosque in Islamabad has once again drawn attention to the communal atmosphere in Pakistan. This attack took place in Islamabad’s Shia Mosque Kastra-e-Khadijatul Kubra. At least 31 people lost their lives and more than 170 people were injured in this attack. The number of Sunni mosques is more than that of Shia mosques.
There are much more Sunni mosques in Pakistan than Shia mosques. It shows the composition of the country’s population. According to US Department of State data, Pakistan is about 96% Muslim and among them 80% to 90% are Sunni and 10% to 20% are Shia. Due to the overwhelming majority of Sunnis, the number of Sunni mosques across the country is naturally high.

According to recent estimates given in the Economic and Religious Survey, there are a total of more than 6 lakh mosques and madrassas in Pakistan. Most of these institutions are associated with Sunni sects, especially Bareilly and Deobandi schools.
Although overall there are more Sunni mosques but the picture changes in some places. For example, there is a large Shia population in Gilgit-Baltistan and Shia religious organizations have a strong and clear presence there. Some parts of Kurram district and some urban areas of Karachi and Lahore also have a large Shia population.
Communal tensions and security concerns
Because Shias are a minority, Shia mosques are more vulnerable to attacks by extremist groups. In the last few years, Shia mosques, processions and religious gatherings have been increasingly targeted in communal violence.
Suicide blasts have happened in Islamabad before
On November 11, 2025, a suicide blast took place outside the District and Sessions Court in G-11 area of Islamabad. Pakistan had clearly targeted India regarding that attack but India had completely rejected that allegation. Let us tell you that 12 people were killed and more than 30 people were injured in that attack. At present, emergency has been imposed in Islamabad after the blast in the mosque.
