After the Islamic Revolution of 1979, first Ayatollah Rohella Khamenei and then Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, Mujtaba Khamenei is the third person to become the Supreme Leader of Iran. And the Supreme Leader of Iran means that the Supreme Leader will have the final say on every decision taken by Iran. But before that, it is also important to know that apart from being the younger son of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, Mujtaba Khamenei also has a different identity, which may not be made public, but secretly, he has been considered more powerful in Iran than before.
Mujtaba, a fierce fighter
Mujtaba Khamenei joined Iran’s most elite force IRGC at the age of 17. In 1987, Mujtaba became part of the Habib-bin-Mujahir battalion of the IRGC. In the 80s, when there was a war going on between Iraq and Iran, Mujtaba was a part of many major operations of Iran in that war. Be it Operation Beit-ul-Muqaddas or Operation Don or Operation Marsad, Mujtaba was involved in everything. Even after the end of this war, fighters with Mujtaba continued to reach high ranks in the IRGC, becoming heads of different security agencies of Iran and being the son of the President of Iran and then the Supreme Leader of Iran, all his old comrades maintained close relations with Mujtaba. This is the reason why Mujtaba’s status in IRGC had already become big.
Mujtaba, an incompetent Mufti
Even though Mujtaba has become the Supreme Leader of Iran, but according to the Constitution of Iran, he neither had the ability to become the Supreme Leader before nor does he have it now. In fact, the Constitution of Iran says that the minimum qualification for the person who becomes the Supreme Leader of Iran is to be Ayatollah. Because in Islam, Ayatollah is the only person who can interpret Islam, explain Sharia and his opinion on religious issues is considered the final opinion. Although Mujtaba’s father Ali Khamenei was also not an Ayatollah, but after the death of Rohella Khamenei, after Ali Khamenei was elected the Supreme Leader, he also started being called Ayatollah. It was during his time that the Constitution was changed and it was decided that it is not necessary for the Supreme Leader to be a Grand Ayatollah. Now the same is happening with Mujtaba also. After father Ali Khamenei assumed office, the people of Iran accepted him as Ayatollah, but Mujtaba is still only Hujjat-ul-Islam. That is, he is a medium level Mufti, hence his election as Supreme Leader is not being liked by the people of Iran only. And people are not ready to accept him as Ayatollah. This is the reason why the Expert Assembly of 88 people, which elected Mujtaba as the Supreme Leader, is also appealing to the influential people of Iran that the whole of Iran should support Mujtaba during the war, so that he can fight the war against America and Israel.
Mujtaba, a billionaire businessman
Even after becoming the Supreme Leader of Iran, Mujtaba has been recognized more as a billionaire businessman than as a Mufti. Even though there is no official data available about Mujtaba’s total wealth, it is believed that Mujtaba has assets worth more than Rs 25 thousand crores. Bloomberg report says that he has a mansion and real estate worth more than Rs 1100 crore in London’s Billionaires Row i.e. Bishops Avenue. He is claimed to have many luxury hotels and buildings in Germany, Spain and France, whose total estimated value is around Rs 4 thousand crores. Mujtaba has a bungalow in the expensive Emirates Hills of Dubai. Apart from this, Mujtaba has also deposited money in banks of Syria, Venezuela and some African countries. Bloomberg report says that Mujtaba also had relations with Ali Ansari of Ayande Bank. Even though this bank has now merged with Bank Melli Iran, Mujtaba had billions of dollars deposited in this bank. Although all these are part of the reports, officially Mujtaba does not have any property.
Mujtaba, a fundamentalist ruler
Mujtaba Khamenei is considered to be a more fundamentalist ruler than Ali Khamenei. After assuming power in Iran, Ali Khamenei also tried to maintain a balance with the opposing groups. But Mujtaba’s history is full of cruelty. Since Mujtaba has already been in the IRGC, he has an army of his own, which has been crushing any rebellion. Basij, the paramilitary force of Iran, also has top positions filled with old friends of Mujtaba, through whom Mujtaba has been getting things done as per his wish.
In 2009, when anti-election protests took place in Iran and it was named Green Movement, the Iranian government crushed it. Even though Mujtaba did not hold any post at that time, even today the people of Iran believe that the atrocities that happened on the people were ordered by Mujtaba. Motazba is responsible for suppressing the Mahsa Amini case in September 2022. When Mahsa Amini was arrested for not wearing hijab and when ‘Gasht-e-Irshad’ beat her to death, there were demonstrations across Iran. Then the internet was shut down in Iran, people were arrested through CCTV and AI. Iran’s army, IRGC and Basij were given every kind of freedom to crush that movement. And all this happened at the behest of Mujtaba, because his father Ali Khamenei was the Supreme Leader of Iran at that time. Then the agitators used to raise a slogan, saying-
Mujtaba, Bemir o Rahbari Ra Nabini
That means, Mujtaba, you may die but never become the supreme leader. However this did not happen. After the death of Ali Khamenei, now Mujtaba is the Supreme Leader of Iran, so there is a fear that after the end of the war, fanaticism will increase even more in Iran.
Mujtaba, who will die, will not surrender
Ali Khamenei was a little more moderate than Mujtaba, so he also did not kneel before America or Israel. In such a situation, experts have the same opinion regarding Mujtaba that even if Mujtaba is killed by America or Israel, he will not kneel down. And if Mujtaba remains alive even after the end of this war, then no one will be able to stop Iran from making nuclear weapons.
All this will happen only when Israel or America agrees to end this war. Be it Trump or Netanyahu, at first they saw Mujtaba as a weak administrator. But now that Iran is intensifying its attacks under the leadership of Mujtaba, perhaps Trump or Netanyahu will have to think again about this war. If America ends this war without achieving anything, then Iran will win and Mujtaba’s leadership will be sealed, but if Mujtaba wants to prolong this war, then the outcome of this war will decide the future of Mujtaba.
