Israeli President Isaac Herzog responded to US President Donald Trump’s appeal to pardon Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. He has clearly said that his country is independent and he is free to take decisions as per the legal process.
What is the whole matter?
Trump had written a letter asking Herzog to intervene in the ongoing corruption case against Netanyahu. These are those cases whose investigation has been going on for more than five years. Trump had called these allegations politically motivated and unfair. In his response, the Israeli President said that although he values his friendship with President Trump, Israel’s legal system must remain independent and be fully respected.
Herzog said – Israel is a sovereign country
Herzog said Israel is a sovereign country, and its legislative processes should be maintained without outside interference. He further said that although this request was very special, his first, second and third priority is the well-being and honesty of the Israeli people.
Netanyahu called the action politically motivated
Netanyahu, who has faced multiple corruption charges, has denied any wrongdoing, and called the legal action politically motivated. The interview given to the Politico site was published on Saturday night. In this he said, pre-emptive pardon (amnesty given in the middle of the trial) is decided on the basis of merit and I want to take the decision on it with full seriousness.
Netanyahu faces three charges each of bribery and fraud and breach of trust. These allegations are of misuse of the press and taking illegal gifts in exchange for government help. He has denied any wrongdoing and said the allegations were made by police and government lawyers in an attempt to stage a political coup.
Just a week ago, on November 30, Netanyahu had submitted his pardon application to the President’s Office. Nowhere in the letter had he written that he agreed with the allegations against him.
