If you are a dog lover then this news can be very important for you. Chandigarh administration has implemented new strict rules regarding pet and community dogs in the city. Under the ‘Pet and Community Dog Bylaw’ notification, now if a registered dog defecates in the open, a fine of Rs 10,000 will be imposed on its owner.
Also, some dangerous breeds like American Bull Dog, Pitbull, Rottweiler and Dogo Argentino are completely banned from keeping at home. However, for those who already have such dogs, it will be mandatory for them to get them registered within 45 days.
Breed restrictions and registration rules
The Municipal Corporation has banned seven aggressive breeds – American Bull Dog, American Pitbull, Pitbull Terrier, Bull Terrier, Cane Corso, Dogo Argentino and Rottweiler. Now no new person will be able to rear these breeds. Dogs already kept will have to be registered within 45 days, otherwise a fine will be imposed. It has been made mandatory to wear a metal token and leash around the neck of every dog. The registration fee has been kept at Rs 500 and will be renewed after every five years for Rs 50. If found without registration, the Municipal Corporation can confiscate the dog.
Household size limits
Now only a limited number of dogs can be kept in every house. Only one dog can be kept in a five marla house. If three different families live on three floors of the same house, each family can keep one dog. Permission has been given to keep two dogs in a 10 marla house, three in a 12 marla house and 4 dogs in a one kanal house. Families living on different floors will also be required to register separately. The aim is to control the number of pet animals in the city.
Ban in public places and strictness on cruelty
The administration has also banned taking pet dogs to some public places. It will be completely prohibited to take dogs to places like Sukhna Lake, Rose Garden, Shanti Kunj, Laser Valley, Mini Rose Garden, Terrace Garden, Shivalik Garden and Botanical Garden. At the same time, if a complaint is received against an owner for misbehaving with the dog, a special team will go to the spot and investigate. If the allegations are proved, the dog can be seized and legal action will be taken against the owner under the Cruelty Against Animals Act. New provisions have also been implemented for stray dogs roaming in the streets so that cleanliness and safety is maintained in the city.
