Ricky ponting on shubman gill: From June 20, the Indian cricket team will play a five -match Test series in England. BCCI has announced Team India for the tour of England. The Indian board has appointed young batsman Shubman Gill as India’s captain in the five -match Test series against England. Now Ricky Ponting has given a big statement on Shubman Gill.
Former Australian legendary cricketer and captain and Punjab Kings head coach Ricky Ponting believes that Shubman Gill will have to work on his Test batting. He said that he should land at number four in batting order amidst the additional responsibility of captaincy on England tour.
After the retirement of Virat Kohli, there is speculation about batting at number four for India. Ponting said that Gill can land on this sequence in the early stages of captaincy. Ponting said in a conversation with PTI during the IPL, “Shubman Gill’s form in the white ball format is tremendous. He will have to do some work in Test batting. If you are a new captain then it is not easy. It is not easy for the new captain to think about his batting.”
He said that India has taken the right decision by making Gill captain. Two -time World Cup winning captain Ponting said that Gill will captain for a long time. He said, “In the last session, when Rohit decided not to play Sydney Test, I could have been a captain in my eyes. There was a possibility of Bumrah’s fitness and he was injured during that match itself.”
Ponting also said that Gill will have to work on the mental aspect of Test match batting. He said, “There have also been great Test batsmen whose defensive technology was not as good. Virender Sehwag is a good example of this, but if you have control over your strokes then there is no need to think much about defensive technology. You have to work on the mental aspect of the game.”
