How did Surma Bhopali become so popular?
Surma Bhopali’s unique character was seen in the film Sholay, released in 1975. But you will be surprised to know that this character was not before in the script of the film. Later, the pair of filmmakers Salim and Javed Akhtar composed this character for a light-hearted comedy. Later, Jagdeep came to know people from this character. Playing this character, the actor not only put a temper of comedy of the film but also made it memorable for a lifetime.

Jagdeep decided a long journey before becoming ‘Surma Bhopali’
Jagdeep was such an artist that he used to leave his mark wherever he used to go. He used to get well in the hearts of the audience with his dialogue, facial expression and funny style. After the father’s death, Jagdeep started working at the age of just 6.
His mother used to live by making loaves in the orphanage in Mumbai. Seeing his mother’s hard work, the legendary artist also started working from a young age to help him. He used to sell comb, soap and toys on the streets of Mumbai. During the sale of the same, a person caught sight of him. He was none other than BR Chopra Saheb.
At that time, the filmmaker was looking for a child artist for his film ‘Afsana’. He worked only in this film, because by selling goods, he could earn only one or a half rupees a day or one and a half rupees a day, while he was getting only three rupees for clapping on the set. It was from here that his film journey started.

After this, he played small, but memorable roles in films like ‘Do Bigha Zameen’, ‘Munna’, ‘Hum Panchi Ek Dal Ke’, and, ‘R Paar’. He was also honored by the then Prime Minister Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru for his brilliant performance in ‘Hum Panchi Ek Dal Ke’. AVM Production launched him as a hero in films like ‘Bhabhi’, ‘Barkha’ and ‘Bindiya’.
In these films, he played a straightforward boy. The song ‘Chal Ud Ja Re Panchi’ from the film ‘Bhabhi’ still remembers people, in which he appeared with actress Nanda. But when he did a comedy in Shammi Kapoor’s film ‘Brahmachari’, the audience admitted that he is a tremendous comedian more than the hero. After this, he made his mark as a comedian.
