Disadvantages of eating jaggery: In India, eating sweets is not just a habit but a kind of tradition. Many people eat it for taste, while many maintain distance from sweets due to their fitness or conditions like diabetes. Still, a little sweetness makes the mind feel good, and most people consider it healthier to choose ‘natural sweet’ instead of refined sugar. The most preferred option among these is jaggery. But do you know how safe it is to eat jaggery every day? If you are eating jaggery without thinking, then it is important to know its disadvantages once.

Why is jaggery not always a safe option?

Jaggery contains iron, potassium, magnesium and many nutrients, hence it is considered healthy. But as it is said that excess of anything causes harm, the same rule applies to jaggery also. If you have lifestyle problems like diabetes, jaggery can increase your blood sugar and triglycerides. Therefore, considering it to be healthy and eating more than required can cause many problems.

Jaggery also contains sugar and in large quantities

Many people eat jaggery daily considering it to be a safe alternative to sugar, but they probably do not know that 100 grams of jaggery contains about 10 to 15 grams of fructose. It is absolutely possible to increase blood sugar by eating jaggery daily. That is, if consumed in excess, jaggery also acts like sugar, so think carefully before consuming it.

The risk of infection may also increase

Jaggery is prepared from sugarcane juice and the process of making it is not always clean. Many times, if the raw juice is not cleaned properly, germs or impurities remain in it. If the quality of jaggery is poor or it is made in a dirty environment, then there is a possibility of it causing stomach infection. Therefore, always choose jaggery of a trusted brand and do not consume more than required at one go.

Food can also cause allergies

Jaggery is generally considered safe, but in some people, excessive amounts of it can cause allergic reactions, such as stomach ache, cold, cough, nausea, headache or vomiting.
Therefore, if any abnormal reaction is seen in the body after eating jaggery, then take it in controlled quantity only.

There is also a risk of weight gain

Health-conscious people often think that eating jaggery will not affect their diet. But the truth is that fructose, glucose and some amount of fat are also present in jaggery. Just 100 grams of jaggery contains about 383 calories, so consuming it in excess can contribute to weight gain.

Too much jaggery can cause digestive upset

A small amount of jaggery improves immunity and metabolism, but in large amounts it spoils digestion. Jaggery produces heat in the body which can cause burning sensation, constipation or discomfort in the stomach. Therefore, the right way to eat jaggery is to consume less quantity, at the right time and focus on quality.
