Delhi Police on Tuesday, January 20, registered a case against an associate professor of Jamia Millia Islamia under the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act. An employee of the polytechnic department of the university had accused the associate professor of abusing and assaulting him.
Police said that contrary to the claims being made on social media, there is no allegation of conversion. On the complaint of Ramphool Meena, Undergraduate Education Officer at JMI Polytechnic, an FIR has been lodged at Jamia Nagar police station under Section 3(I)(R) SC/ST Act 1989 and Section 115(2) of the Indian Code of Justice (BNS) against Riazuddin, Associate Professor, Department of Civil Engineering, and investigation has been started.
Associate professor of civil engineering has been accused
The university has rejected the allegations of attack and the viral video on social media, calling it doctored. According to a police statement, an employee of the institute, located in south-east Delhi’s Okhla area, had filed a complaint against an associate professor of the civil engineering department on Monday. The employee alleged that on January 13, the associate professor came to her desk, used objectionable language and behaved violently with her.
According to the information received by the police, “Legal action is being taken.” Statements are being recorded and evidence is being collected. Police have denied any angle of conversion in this dispute. The police officer says, “It is clarified that the complainant has not made any allegation regarding any attempt at forced conversion. Such news is factually incorrect and baseless. Police have appealed to the people not to pay attention to rumours.
Jamia Millia Islamia University presented clarification
Police sources said that the complainant is a UDC in the Polytechnic Department. Meanwhile, the official spokesperson of Jamia Millia Islamia said, “We have not received any formal complaint from our staff regarding any assault or caste-based incident.” She also said that the video of the attack being circulated on social media has been doctored. The video being circulated online has no connection with any alleged attack.
