Jammu kashmir unmarried women: Marriage in Jammu and Kashmir has been more than a personal union for a long time. The society has been male dominated here. Here only the elders of the family used to take decisions in matters like marriage. Marriage was quite common here at a young age. Social stability and economic ideas were considered more important here than their own wishes. Not only this, the education and career of women faded in front of family expectations. But everything is changing in the last few years. Especially in urban areas. Now here women are adopting the right to decide on their marriage rapidly.
Changing trends in marriage
According to a report, about 57% of women in Jammu and Kashmir are currently unmarried. It also includes the number of widows and divorced women. Now the average age of women’s wedding has increased to 24 years here. Let us tell you that the national average age is 22 years. The average age of marriage before the 1990 migration was about 21 years. But the question arises that how did this change suddenly come?
Economic stability and unemployment
Delay or deferred in marriage is also a rich economic security. Actually, the turbulent political history and limited employment opportunities of this place have become a challenge of economic freedom for the youth. Let us tell you that the wedding in Kashmir includes many expenses like the ceremony, dowry and family responsibilities like other cultures. Now without any stable employment, both men and women have to face a lot of difficulties in meeting all these needs. Because of this, there is a delay in marriage.
Focus on education and career
With this, another big reason comes out. That is the increasing importance of education and career. In Jammu and Kashmir, many young women and men are delaying marriage to complete higher education or to pursue their career. Young people are considering marriage as a hindrance in personal development and freedom. Especially women have to fulfill social expectations regarding marriage and at the same time have to achieve success in their career. This dual challenge causes their troubles.
Social expectations and marriage pressure
Even today, the traditional marriage practices are going on, they put a lot of pressure on the families. Orange marriage is common. But in this, the families seek the spouse on the basis of the caste, economic situation and other criteria. There is so much hope that can cause to give in marriage. Especially when the family is insisting on dowry or they have a lot of expectations. Although awareness is being increased on such issues and efforts are being made to reduce these practices, but despite this, these practices have a lot of impact on the time of marriage of women.
In Jammu and Kashmir, women are giving priority to their meaningful relations and their wishes instead of walking according to social expectations. The women have approved to stay married instead of compromising in the election of their partner. This is a major cultural change.
