These days Jammu University is at the center of discussion. The reason is the change made in the post graduation syllabus of the Political Science Department. Some time ago the department had included a chapter related to the Father of the Nation of Pakistan Mohammad Ali Jinnah in the syllabus. After this decision, student organizations started protesting. The debate escalated, meetings took place and finally the university has now decided to make changes in the syllabus. All the parts related to Jinnah are being removed and in their place the thoughts of Shaheed Bhagat Singh will be taught.
As soon as the news of adding a lesson based on Jinnah in the post graduation syllabus came out, student organizations made it an issue. In particular, Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad opposed this and demanded that this part be removed. He said that such subjects should be selected thoughtfully for teaching to Indian students.
At that time it was said by the university that this change has been made as per the new education policy. The objective is to give students a broad and balanced perspective, so that they can understand history and politics from different aspects. But the protests did not seem to stop.

Important meeting of Board of Studies
In view of the matter, a meeting of the Board of Studies of the Political Science Department was called. Representatives of many colleges affiliated to the university participated in this meeting. The syllabus was reviewed in detail. Many issues were discussed and in some cases differences also emerged.
After a long debate, it was agreed that all topics related to Jinnah should be removed from the syllabus. Along with this, it was decided that in his place, the thoughts of Shaheed Bhagat Singh will now be included in the syllabus, so that students can get a better opportunity to understand the freedom struggle and the future of the country.
Some names will remain in the syllabus
It was also discussed in the meeting what stance should be taken towards other historical personalities. During this time no member raised any objection on the names of Allama Iqbal and Sir Syed Ahmed Khan. Therefore, their lessons will remain in the syllabus as before. That means the changes will be limited only to the parts related to Jinnah. The university says that the purpose of the syllabus is to introduce students to different ideas.
