India’s Next Test Captain 2025: Jasprit Bumrah was the first choice to become the next Test captain of the Indian cricket team after Rohit Sharma’s retirement. Why did Jaspreet Bumrah go backward?
Many giants of India have said that Shubman Gill is a good player emerging, but Jasprit Bumrah will be suitable as a new Test captain. He was also at the forefront of the race to become a new captain but lagged behind. He was injured in the final match of the Border Gavaskar Trophy. Bumrah, who went out of the field due to injury to the pitch, could not return for a long time. He stayed out of the Champions Trophy, after which he did not even play in the opening matches of IPL.

Cricket boss did not agree?
Shubman Gill was not unanimously chosen for the Test captaincy. On Thursday, a PTI report indicated that the ‘influential people running Indian cricket’ got angry with Gill’s sudden emergence, but BCCI chose him as a new captain and informed him about it. The report also said that Bumrah’s name may still emerge in the discussion, recently the “extended meeting” between Gill and Head Coach Gautam Gambhir in Delhi has almost confirmed his becoming a new captain. Gill is the captain of Gujarat Titans in the IPL, he has captained in the limited overs for India.
The report said, “Team India’s head coach Gautam Gambhir’s presence in Mumbai to worship at the Siddhivinayak temple intensified that Shubman Gill is still not ready for the role of leadership. A few days ago, there was a long meeting of the new captain Gill with the coach in Delhi, so there is little possibility of the selectors or Gambhir to retreat from his original stance. But it would be completely silly to assume that Gill was not taken into confidence before Gill was selected as the next Test captain. “
