There is big news for lakhs of engineering students of the country. The date of Joint Entrance Examination (JEE Advanced) 2026 has been fixed for students dreaming of admission in IIT. This year JEE Advanced exam will be held on 17 May 2026. On the basis of the result of JEE Main 2026, about 2.5 lakh students will be able to appear in this prestigious examination. This time the responsibility of conducting JEE Advanced has been handed over to the Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee (IIT Roorkee).

Like every year, this time too only those students who perform better in JEE Main will get a chance to appear in JEE Advanced. The number of students who will be called for different classes has already been decided. However, if we look at the trend of the last few years, this number may be slightly more than 2.5 lakh. The reason for this is that many times the marks of students are equal, which is called a tie situation.

When two or more students have the same marks, then certain rules are adopted to decide the rank. First of all it is seen which student has more positive marks. There is also negative marking in JEE Advanced, that is, marks are deducted for giving wrong answers. In such a situation, choosing the right questions becomes very important. If positive marks are also equal, then Mathematics marks are considered first. Even after this, if there is a tie then the Physics marks are considered. If even after all this the score remains the same, then such students are given the same rank.

last year’s situation

Talking about previous years, about 2 lakh 50 thousand 284 students were in the race for JEE Advanced in 2024. Whereas in 2025 this number had reduced slightly to about 2 lakh 50 thousand 236. The cutoff was also slightly reduced in 2025, which benefited some students. Similarly, this time also the students are hopeful that if the preparation is good, then the path for admission in IIT can open.

When will the registrations take place?

The registration process for JEE Advanced 2026 will start from 23 April 2026 and will continue till 2 May 2026. Eligible candidates will be able to apply online during this period. The examination will be conducted in two shifts on the same day. The first shift will be from 9 am to 12 noon, while the second shift will be from 2:30 pm to 5:30 pm. It will be necessary for all the candidates to give both the papers. The student will not be given rank if he is absent from any one paper.

What are the rules?

According to the examination rules, to appear in JEE Advanced, the date of birth of the candidate should be on or after October 1, 2001. Reserved category students are given age relaxation as per rules. Apart from this, any student can give this examination only maximum twice and that too in two consecutive years. This means that if a student has already given JEE Advanced twice, he will not get a second chance.
