The number of people drowning during Chhath festival in Jharkhand has increased to 11. On Monday (27 October) alone, five more children drowned at different places and could not be saved. Police said that most of these people drowned during Chhath Puja.
On Monday (27 October), a minor and two men also went missing in the reservoirs. Police said that five children died in Hazaribagh, Garhwa and Simdega districts of the state. On Sunday (26 October), 6 other people drowned in Simdega and Palamu districts.
Two girls drowned during evening puja
Police have informed that during Chhath Puja last Sunday evening, two girls Gungun Kumari (11) and Rupa Tiwari (12) drowned in a pond in Bela village of Keredari police station area of Hazaribagh. The bodies were sent for post-mortem.
According to the police, 13-year-old Rahul Kumar drowned while bathing in the Danro river of Sadar police station area in Garhwa on Monday afternoon. Sadar police station in-charge Sunil Tiwari said that while bathing in the river, Rahul went into deep water and drowned. Local people pulled him out of the water and took him to Sadar Hospital, where doctors declared him dead.
Two and a half year old girl drowned in a bucket of water
A police official said that a two and a half year old girl drowned in a bucket filled with water in Mayangsor village of Bano police station area of Simdega district on Monday. The girl and her grandmother were at home at the time of the incident. The grandmother went to another room, but when she came back, she found the girl drowned in the bucket.
Police said that after offering Arghya during Chhath Puja on Monday evening, a minor boy drowned in the Subarnarekha river near Saherbera in Chandil police station area of Seraikela-Kharsawan district. Chandil police station in-charge Dilshan Birua said that 14-year-old Aryan Yadav went into the dangerous area of the river and started drowning.
After this Prateek Kumar Yadav (19) and Sanjay Singh (45) jumped into the river to save him. The NDRF team and local divers recovered the body of the boy, while the search for the two missing people will resume on Tuesday i.e. this morning.
An official said that a 16-year-old boy went missing after jumping into a canal in Palamu on Monday. This incident happened near Chaura bridge in Vishnupur village of Hussainabad police station area. Three children drowned in a pond in Simdega on Sunday evening and three others died in a similar manner in Palamu district.
