As soon as the new Chief Justice Bhushan Ramakrishna Gavai was sworn in, he first went to the mother and took blessings by touching her feet. He is the 52nd CJI of the country. This day is not only very special for Justice Gawai but also for his whole family, so the whole family joined his swearing in. After touching the mother’s feet, Justice also met other members of the Gawai family.

Justice Gawai’s mother Kamal Tai Gawai arrived in Delhi from Amravati in Maharashtra so that she would attend the swearing -in ceremony of the son. CJI Gawai first took blessings from his mother as soon as he took the body. President Draupadi Murmu administered him the oath of CJI. Then he met former President Ram Nath Kovind, Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar, former Chief Justice Sanjeev Khanna, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Defense Minister Rajnath Singh, Home Minister Amit Shah, Health Minister JP Nadda and other Union Ministers and guests.

Justice Gawai will hold the post of CJI for more than 6 months, he will turn 65 in November. He was sworn in by President Draupadi Murmu at a brief ceremony at the Rashtrapati Bhavan’s Republic Mandap. Justice Gawai took oath in Hindi. Justice Sanjeev Khanna’s tenure as CJI has ended on Tuesday (May 13, 2025).

Justice Gawai was promoted as a judge of the Supreme Court on May 24, 2019. His tenure will be more than six months and he will remain in office till 23 November. Born on November 24, 1960 in Amravati, Maharashtra, Justice Gawai was promoted as an additional judge of the Bombay High Court on 14 November 2003. He became a permanent judge of the High Court on November 12, 2005.

Justice Gawai has been a part of many constitution benches in the Supreme Court, who have given important decisions. He joined the bar on March 16, 1985 and was a permanent lawyer of Nagpur Municipal Corporation, Amravati Municipal Corporation and Amravati University. Justice Gawai was appointed as Assistant Government Advocate and Additional Public Prosecutor in the Nagpur bench of Bombay High Court from August 1992 to July 1993. He was appointed a government prosecutor for the Nagpur bench on 17 January 2000.
