How did Brijesh get rabies?

During March 2025, a small dog’s child was drowning in the village drain. When Brijesh tried to save him, the dog’s baby bitten his right hand finger. How dangerous is rabies?
Rabies is a deadly viral disease caused by rabies virus (lysavirus, rubberirus family). This neurotropic virus affects the central nervous system of humans, causing acute inflammation in the brain. It is also called hydrophobia or watercutta, as its symptoms include fear of water. The rabies mainly spreads from infected animals, especially dog bites. According to the WHO, every year 26 thousand to 59 thousand people lose their lives due to rabies. More than 95 percent of these cases are reported in Asia and Africa.
How fast does rabies spread in the body?
The spread of rabies virus is fixed for many reasons. The reasons behind the cutting place, depth of the wound and virus etc. are responsible. Dr. Swati Rajagopal, an infectious pathologist at the Aster CMI Hospital in Bangalore, says that the rabies virus reaches the brain through peripheral nerves from the site of animal bites. This process usually takes 1 to 3 months, but in some cases it can be less than a week or even for more than a year.
How does rabies virus reach the brain?
- Entry in body: The rabies virus enters the wound through the saliva of an infected animal. Dogs, cats, monkeys, bats or other mammals can spread by bite, scratching or licking it. If there is a deep wound on the head or face, the virus spreads rapidly.
- Access to peripheral nerves: From the cutting place the virus enters the muscles and nerves and moves towards the brain through the nervous system. Its speed can be 3 to 12 mm per day, which depends on the cutting place and the distance of the brain.
- Swelling in the brain: The virus produces acute inflammation (encephalitis) after reaching the brain. This causes neurological damage, which can lead to paralysis, coma and death.
