Every regiment of the Indian Army has a distinct identity, but when it comes to 13 Jammu and Kashmir Rifles (13 Jak RIF), a name first comes out- Captain Vikram Batra. In the Kargil war, this jambaz, who roared like “Yeh Dil Maange More”, sacrificed his life for the country and gave the 13 Jak RIF the identity that was worth calling ‘Brewst of the Brave’.
13 Jak RIF is a battalion of the Jammu and Kashmir Rifles Regiment of the Indian Army. Its history is associated with the era of princely states, when Maharaja Gulab Singh laid its foundation in Jammu in 1820. It was then known as Jammu and Kashmir State Force. After independence, when Jammu and Kashmir became a part of India, this regiment was included in the Indian Army.
Shown real power in Kargil war
The Kargil War of 1999 was no less than a test for 13 Jak RIF. The battalion dusted the enemies in inaccessible areas like Dras and Mushkoh Valley. During these missions, Captain Vikram Batra attacked the bunkers and withdrew many peaks from the enemies. For this indomitable courage, he was posthumously awarded the Param Vir Chakra.
Not only this, 13 Jak RIF received the title of ‘DRAS’ and ‘Mushkoh’ Battle Honor, ‘Kargil’ theater Honor, and ‘Bravest of the Brave’ for the might done in Kargil. This battalion was awarded 2 Param Vir Chakra, 8 Vir Chakra, 16 Army Medal and many other honors.

Martyr Captain Vikram Batra was not just a soldier, he is an inspiration for today’s younger generation. He has proved that if there is patriotism in the heart, whatever the enemy is, victory is certain. 13 Jak RIF and Vikram Batra reminds us that the borders of India are not only with the blood of the soldiers, but their courage.
