Karwa Chauth 2025: The fast of Karva Chauth is not only for married women, now unmarried girls are also observing this holy fast. This festival, celebrated on Krishna Chaturthi date of Kartik month, has acquired a new meaning in today’s changing times.
While married women pray for the long life of their husbands, unmarried girls worship Lord Shiva and Parvati and pray for their future spouses. According to mythological texts, the fast observed on this day is a confluence of penance, devotion and good fortune, whether it is a married woman or a girl.
The festival of Karva Chauth has a very special significance in Indian culture. This festival is celebrated on the Chaturthi date of Krishna Paksha of Kartik month. Especially this fast is observed by married women for the long life and prosperity of their husbands. But today, not only married women, but many unmarried girls also observe this fast. On this day, they worship Lord Shiva, Mother Parvati and Karva Mata and wish to get a good life partner.
According to religious beliefs, there is no obstacle for unmarried girls in observing the fast of Karva Chauth, and they also get auspicious results from this fast. Therefore, the importance of this festival is not limited only to the long life of the husband, rather it is a symbol of blessings for both the married and the unmarried.
Women observe waterless fast on the day of Karva Chauth. Married women observe this fast to pray for the well-being and health of their husbands, while unmarried girls do special worship of Lord Shiva and Mother Parvati on this day. They believe that through this puja and fasting they get their desired life partner. On this day, virgin girls do not follow the traditional Solah Shringar, but they maintain the sanctity of this fast by wearing new and clean clothes.
The rising of the moon on the night of Karva Chauth is the most important part of this fast. This time the moon will rise at 8:13 pm, and only then women will be able to break their fast by offering Arghya to the moon.
There are some differences in the fasting traditions which are different for unmarried girls and married women. Married women break their fast by looking at the moon through a sieve and then looking at their husband’s face, while unmarried girls break their fast by looking at the stars. However, they can also offer Arghya to the Moon.
Apart from this, there is no special ritual of Sargi for unmarried girls, which is done for married women. Also, during the fast, virgin girls can take fruit or water once a day. According to religious rules, one should stay away from Tamasic and impure things on this day so that the fast can be completed successfully.
