After the death of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, a tense situation has arisen in Pakistan Occupied Kashmir (PoK). Particularly, incidents of violent protests have come to light in Skardu, a Shia-dominated area of Gilgit-Baltistan occupied by Pakistan. According to reports, the protesters set fire to the UN office, Army Public School and SP (Superintendent of Police) office located in Skardu. It is being told that the office of United Nations Military Observer Group in India and Pakistan (UNMOGIP), which monitors activities on the Line of Control (LoC), was also targeted and burnt by the protesters.
After the incidents, deployment of security forces has been increased in the area and efforts are on to control the situation. An appeal has been made by the administration to maintain peace, while the possibility of imposing curfew or restrictive orders in sensitive areas is being expressed. This development has further increased instability in the already tense region. The eyes of the international community are now fixed on this situation, because it can have an impact on regional security.
