Nighttime Urination Kidney Problem: If foam is visible in the urine, then it cannot be normal. Generally, if water is poured after urinating, the foam should disappear automatically. If foam persists, it may be a sign of protein leaking into the urine i.e. proteinuria. At the same time, despite drinking enough water, less urine output indicates that the kidneys are not able to perform filtration properly. Frequent urination during the day can also be a symptom of kidney disease.

It is dangerous to get up again and again to urinate at night.

According to an article published in TOI by Dr. Naveen Reddy Avula, Consultant Nephrologist, Asian Institute of Nephrology and Urology, getting up repeatedly at night to urinate is not considered normal at all and should be taken seriously. Similarly, blood in urine can be a sign of kidney stones, urine infection or serious diseases related to urinary tract and kidneys. It is very important to get tested for all such symptoms. If persistent itching persists throughout the body, it may be a sign of uremia. Uremia occurs when urea and other waste products increase in the blood. Such itching should not be taken lightly. Apart from this, feeling short of breath while walking without much effort or having difficulty while climbing stairs can also be related to kidney problems. Accumulation of excess water in the body puts pressure on the lungs, which causes difficulty in breathing. Many times, the taste of food and drinks starts appearing strange or metallic, or a persistent foul smell starts coming from the mouth. Such change in taste can also be a sign of kidney disease, which people often ignore.

How can prevention be done?

Timely identification is very important in kidney disease, because it can improve both the treatment and future condition. The good thing is that kidney can be checked with some easy tests, such as –

  • Blood Test (Serum Creatinine)
  • Urine test (urine analysis and albumin-to-creatinine ratio)

Some people should keep getting their kidneys checked regularly. These include those people who have diabetes, high blood pressure, someone in the family who has kidney disease, or who have been using painkillers or certain medicines excessively for a long time.
