Traditional Sarees From Bundelkhand: India’s textile tradition is counted among the richest traditions in the world. Different parts of the country have their own special weaving and textile making traditions, behind which we get a glimpse of history, culture and local lifestyle. People all over the world know about Banarasi and Kanjivaram sarees, but there are many traditional weaves in India which have not been much discussed till now. One of these is Lalitpur Zari Silk Saree, which is considered a special handloom art associated with the Bundelkhand region.

Lalitpur is a historical area of Bundelkhand region, located near the border of Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh. The region is known for its old temples, forts and traditional handicrafts. The weaver families here have been preserving the art of making this special type of saree for generations. Local artisans have taught and passed on this weaving technique within the families. This is the reason that even today a glimpse of traditional craft is clearly visible in the sarees made here. Lalitpur sarees are especially recognized for their intricate zari work and strong fabric.

The biggest feature of these sarees is their beautiful combination of zari and silk. The fine silk fabric gives a soft and luxurious look to the saree, while the zari weaving done on the edges and pallu makes it even more attractive. The designs on sarees are often inspired by nature, temple architecture and local cultural symbols. Their color combination is also special, in which colors like golden and silver are often used so that the shine of the brocade comes out.

The process of making Lalitpur Zari Silk Saree is also very laborious. It starts with preparing raw silk threads. First the threads are cleaned, then they are dyed and the threads are prepared for weaving. After this the design is planned, in which the patterns to be made on the saree are decided. When this work is completed the threads are carefully set on the loom and weaving begins. Zari threads are added to the saree with a special technique, which creates beautiful designs on the borders and pallu. Finally the saree is prepared by giving it finishing, which may take several days.
