Ujjwal nikam: The President has nominated four people of the country to the Rajya Sabha, the upper house of Parliament. These include the name of senior lawyer Ujjwal Nikam who brought the culprit of Mumbai attacks to the hanging of Ajmal Kasab. Apart from them, former diplomat Harsh Shringla, historian Meenakshi Jain and Kerala social worker Sadanandan Master have also been nominated for Rajya Sabha.
Talking about Ujjwal Nikam, he was born in Jalgaon district of Maharashtra. It was from here that he started his career as a district prosecutor and then made his mark at the national level. Nikam played a major role in convicting Ravinder Singh for the Kalyan blast in 1991. After that, Ujjwal Nikam became a government lawyer in the 1993 Mumbai serial blast and worked for 14 years in a special court. After this, the state government had argued in 26/11 Mumbai attacks.
Ujjwal Nikam, who has advocated high profile cases?
Apart from these, Ujjwal Nikam joined several major cases including Gulshan Kumar murder case, Pramod Mahajan murder case and 2008 Mumbai attacks. He was also a government lawyer in the 2013 Mumbai gang rape case, Copardi rape and murder case in 2016.
Ujjwal Nikam has been honored with Padma Shri
Ujjwal Nikam sentenced more than 600 convicts to life imprisonment in his 30 -year advocacy career, while 37 convicts have been sentenced to death. When the hearing of the 26/11 case was going on in the year 2009, Nikam was given the security of Z Plus as he was a government lawyer. For contribution to the legal sector, the Government of India honored him with the Padma Shri, the fourth largest award in the country in 2016.
Elections fought on BJP ticket
Ujjwal Nikam was nominated by BJP from Mumbai North Central seat in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. Poonam Mahajan of BJP was earlier on this seat, but by cutting his ticket, BJP fielded Nikam in the election. However, Ujjwal Nikam had to face defeat from Congress candidate Varsha Gaikwad by about 16 thousand votes.
