Pan-India SIR Date: Like Bihar, the process of Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of voter lists will start in 12 states and union territories of the country. Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar said in the press conference that in the second phase of SIR, updation of voter list, addition of names of new voters and correction of errors will be done. CEC said that in the states where there will be SIR, the voter list will be frozen tonight.
CEC Gyanesh Kumar said that the voter list will be revised for the 9th time in the country after independence. It is noteworthy that such revision has been done eight times from 1951 to 2004, while all the political parties have been complaining from time to time about the flaws in the voter list.
Second phase of SIR will start from tomorrow
The Chief Election Commissioner said that the voter list of the states where special intensive revision is going to take place will be frozen at 12 o’clock tonight. A BLO will be deployed at every booth and an ERO (Electoral Registration Officer) will be deployed in every assembly constituency. The ERO will be an SDM level officer. Enumeration Forms (EF) will be printed for all voters today itself. Each BLO will visit every house at least three times to collect information. Voters who are outside their area can also fill this form online. No additional documents or forms will be required during this process.
Second phase SIR will be held in these states
CEC Gyanesh Kumar said that the second phase of SIR will be in Andaman and Nicobar, Chhattisgarh, Goa, Gujarat, Kerala, Lakshadweep, Madhya Pradesh, Puducherry, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh, and West Bengal. It is noteworthy that next year assembly elections are to be held in West Bengal, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Assam and Puducherry. The process of SIR will start from tomorrow in these 12 states. The final draft list will be released on 7 February 2026.
Why did the Election Commission not announce SIR in Assam? This is the reason
There are assembly elections in Assam next year, but SIR has not been announced there. Regarding this, CEC Gyanesh Kumar said that There is a separate law for the citizenship of Assam in the Indian Citizenship Act. Therefore, separate SIR orders will be issued for Assam. At the same time, on the question of deadlock regarding SIR in West Bengal, the Election Commission said that there is no deadlock there. All institutions fulfill their respective responsibilities under the Constitution. The Election Commission is fulfilling its responsibilities and the government there is fulfilling its responsibilities.
What is the process of SIR?
Under the process of SIR, enumeration forms will be printed first. The voter lists of the states where this special intensive revision is going on will be frozen tonight. After this, this form will be given to every voter at home. When the BLOs will go door-to-door and give the forms, they will match the names recorded in it with the voter list of 2003. If the details of name and parents’ names match the list, the voter will not be required to provide any document.
