Pakistan’s politics and army are once again in the headlines. This time the reason is a big constitutional step, the 27th Amendment Bill. Pakistan’s Law Minister Azam Nazir Tarar has recently presented it in the Senate. This bill can bring a historic change in the military system of Pakistan. It is believed that if this bill is passed, Field Marshal Asim Munir may get the new constitutional post of ‘Commander of Defense Forces’ (CDF). This post will be like the Chief of Defense Staff (CDS) of India, who is the head of the three armies of the country, Army, Navy and Air Force.
Law Minister Tarar told in Parliament that the biggest reason for this change is the continuously increasing tensions with India. He said that the methods of modern warfare have now completely changed. In this era of cyber attacks, drone wars and covert operations, it has become necessary to further strengthen the structure of the army. He said that many important military posts were earlier under the Army Act, but there was no mention of them in the 1973 Constitution of Pakistan. That is why now the government wants that the top command of the army should also be included in the Constitution, so that it can get legal and constitutional power.
Increased stir after Operation Sindoor
After ‘Operation Vermillion’ launched by India on May 7, there was a sudden increase in turmoil in Pakistan’s politics and army. In this operation, India attacked the hideouts of terrorists in Pakistan and Pakistan Occupied Kashmir (POK). It is said that more than 100 terrorists were killed in this attack. In response, Pakistan also took military action, but even before the situation became serious, both the countries announced a ceasefire on May 10.
On the same day, another big incident happened in Pakistan, Asim Munir was promoted to the post of Field Marshal. This has happened for the second time in the history of Pakistan. Earlier, in 1959, Ayub Khan had made himself Field Marshal. After this decision, questions began to arise whether the army in Pakistan is once again moving towards gaining political power.
What will be the effect of the term ‘CDF’?
If this 27th Amendment Bill is passed, Asim Munir will become the most powerful military officer in the history of Pakistan. The post of ‘Commander of Defense Forces’ i.e. CDF will give supreme authority over the Army, Navy and Air Force. This would mean that the role of the Prime Minister and President of Pakistan in military matters may be limited. Now the real military decisions and strategy will be in the hands of the CDF.
This post will be similar to India’s CDS, which ensures coordination and wartime coordination between the three services. This will be a new experiment for Pakistan, which can completely change its military and political system.
Asim Munir’s salary and facilities
However, the Government of Pakistan has not yet officially given information about the salary and facilities of the CDF post. According to reports, this post can have a salary of about 30 percent more than that of Field Marshal. Apart from this, privileges like lifelong government security, special residence, advisory role in foreign policy and permanent membership in the National Security Council can also be given with this post.
