Saudi Arabia has relaxed the restrictions on alcohol and foreign non-Muslims living there can now buy alcohol. However, not everyone will be allowed to do this. Only those people will be able to buy liquor, whose monthly salary is 50 thousand riyals i.e. 13,300 dollars or more. To buy liquor, the customer will have to declare his salary at the shop.
No statement has come yet from the government regarding this. Many people told news agency AFP that the Saudi administration has quietly relaxed the sale of alcohol. Non-Muslims can buy liquor from the country’s only government approved liquor shop in Riyadh by providing their salary certificate. Till now only people with visa premium or diplomats were allowed to buy liquor.
People said that customers can buy liquor from liquor shops in Riyadh, the capital of Saudi Arabia, under the monthly point based allowance system. Earlier in the Bloomberg report, it was also told that new liquor shops are being built in two more cities of Saudi Arabia.
According to a New York Times report, customers said that foreign non-Muslims can avail the monthly quota through an ID number provided by the government and a smartphone app. Use smartphone app Diplomat. This app has been created by Tax and Customs Authority.
Alcohol has been banned in Saudi Arabia since 1952. Two years ago, in 2024, the first liquor shop for foreign diplomats was opened in the Diplomatic Area of Riyadh and now foreign citizens can also buy liquor from here. However, no official statement has come from the government on this. Meanwhile, there are reports of shops opening in two other big cities of Saudi, Jeddah and Dharhan.
Everyone is surprised to see this change in Saudi Arabia. There are two holiest places of Islam in this country. Apart from this, there are strict rules regarding alcohol, dress code for women and driving in Saudi Arabia. However, these strict rules have been relaxed over the years, for example, the ban on women driving here was lifted some time ago.
