A case of demolition of a statue of a Hindu deity allegedly by the Thai Army has come to light in Cambodia. India has strongly condemned this on Wednesday (24 December). New Delhi said that such derogatory acts hurt the sentiments of Hindu devotees across the world and should not happen.
Regarding this whole matter, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said that we have recently received reports of demolition of the statue of a Hindu deity, which was located in the area affected by the Thai-Cambodia border dispute. He further said that the people of this region respect and worship Hindu and Buddhist deities with great devotion. People have unwavering faith in them. He also said that this is a part of our common civilizational heritage.
India appealed to both countries for peace
India appealed to both the countries (Thailand-Cambodia) to take the help of dialogue and diplomacy to maintain peace and prevent loss of life and property. Clashes between the two countries began in July and resumed this month despite a ceasefire brokered by US President Donald Trump. Several videos of demolition of Lord Vishnu’s statue using backhoe loader have gone viral on social media.
Where was the statue of Hindu god demolished?
According to the report of news agency AFP, Preah Vihear spokesperson Lim Chanpanha said that this statue was located in the On Ses area of Cambodian territory. Chanpanha said the Vishnu statue, built in 2014, was demolished on Monday (Dec 22), about 100 meters (328 feet) from the border with Thailand. Chanpanha said that we condemn the vandalism of ancient temples and statues worshiped by Buddhist and Hindu followers.
