Middle East Tensions: Fears of a global oil crisis have intensified amid the ongoing conflict in West Asia. However, the Government of India has clarified that at present there is no shortage of oil and gas in the country and the supply remains normal. Union Petroleum Minister Hardeep Singh Puri said in Parliament on Thursday that there is sufficient availability of oil and gas in the country. He told that due to rumours, panic has increased among the people, due to which the demand for gas has suddenly increased.
He also said that the supply of commercial LPG cylinders will start again from today. Consumers in rural areas will be given the facility of second booking within 45 days. According to the minister, India’s refineries are working at full capacity i.e. 100% production and there is no need for anyone to panic.
Indian Oil’s assurance
The country’s leading oil company Indian Oil Corporation also issued a statement saying that it is continuously working to ensure uninterrupted supply of fuel across the country. According to the company, all its fuel stations are operating normally and adequate supply of petrol and diesel continues. People have also been appealed to trust only reliable information and stay away from rumours.

India’s oil dependence
- India imports about 80% of its total oil needs. In such a situation, any kind of instability in the global energy market can affect India.
- Meanwhile, several steps have been taken to maintain global supply.
- The United States has released 172 million barrels of crude oil from its Strategic Petroleum Reserve.
- The International Energy Agency (IEA) has said that its member countries will release 400 million barrels of oil from emergency reserves into the market.
- It is being told that this is the sixth time after the 1973 Oil Crisis that this organization has taken such a step to keep the global oil supply stable.
Tension in West Asia increased on March 28 when Israel launched air strikes on Iran. Now it has been almost two weeks since this conflict. Experts believe that if this war continues for a long time, it could have a major impact on global oil supply and prices, the impact of which could be visible on the economy of many countries including India.
