Why Non Smokers Get Lung Cancer: Cancer cases are continuously increasing all over the world. According to a study recently published in the Indian Journal of Medical Research (IJMR), India may see a rise in lung cancer cases by 2030. The report states that the North-East region of the country will be most affected, while the pace of cases among women is expected to be the fastest. According to WHO, lung cancer is a serious public health problem. In the year 2022, about 2 crore new cancer cases were reported worldwide and 97 lakh people died. Statistics show that one out of every five people may develop cancer at some point in their lifetime.

When does lung cancer occur?

Lung cancer occurs when lung cells start growing in an uncontrolled manner. These bad cells come together and form lumps or tumors, due to which the normal functioning of the lungs starts getting affected and gradually other parts of the body also get affected.

Which part will see the highest number of cases

According to a new study by ICMR, the rate of lung cancer is likely to be highest in the North-East. The special thing is that here the number of cases among women is almost equal to that of men. In the study, data of 57 populations from six different areas of the country was observed. Among these, Aizawl topped, where 35.9 cases per lakh population were recorded in men and 33.7 in women, and the death rate was also the highest.

Due to this reason cases are increasing

According to a TOI report, excessive use of tobacco is still a major reason in this region. Here, more than 68 percent of men and about 54 percent of women consume tobacco. However, doctors say that now the nature of the disease is changing. According to Dr. Saurabh Mittal, Department of Pulmonology, AIIMS, “We are seeing cases of lung cancer even among non-smoking women, which are linked to exposure to indoor air pollution, biomass fuel, second-hand smoke and work-related pollution.”

Cases increasing in men

The study also revealed that the rate of lung cancer among men is higher in districts like Kannur, Kasaragod and Kollam in South India, whereas the consumption of tobacco and alcohol is relatively less here. In the South, the highest number of cases among women were recorded in Hyderabad and Bengaluru. In northern India, cases were higher among men in Srinagar, while women in Srinagar and Pulwama also saw higher rates despite less intoxication. According to the report, in some areas, lung cancer cases are increasing every year at the rate of about 6.7 percent in women and 4.3 percent in men. The sharpest jump in cases was recorded in women in Thiruvananthapuram and in men in Dindigul.
